The direct translation of Kagami Biraki is opening the mirror, but it means “breaking mochi” or breaking a cask of sake. 300 years ago, the fourth Tokugawa Shogun (Commander of the Armies) gathered his troops in his castle to open a cask of sake before going to war. Since the war became successful, the mochi breaking became a ritual in Japanese martial arts dojo and homes. The round mochi is placed during New Year at dojos and homes and around January 11 the mochi is removed and broken in to pieces by hands or hammer to eat.
